If you’re trying to find the right spot for family photos in Clearwater, here’s the honest answer: the location matters a lot less than most people think. What actually makes a session great is light, space, and a relaxed family. Get those three things right and almost any spot in Clearwater will produce beautiful photos.
That said, some locations consistently outperform others. They have better light at golden hour, cleaner backgrounds, more room for kids to move, and a feel that translates well on camera. Below are the five spots I recommend most often for family sessions in the Clearwater area, along with specific tips for getting the most out of each one.
If you want to skip straight to booking, you can check availability here. Otherwise, here are the spots.
1.) Clearwater Florida Coachman Park

Coachman Park sits right on the waterfront in downtown Clearwater and recently went through an $84 million renovation that completely transformed the space. What used to be a simple green lawn is now a beautifully designed 19-acre park with waterfront views of Clearwater Harbor, the Memorial Causeway Bridge, and the Intracoastal Waterway. The result is one of the most photogenic public spaces in Pinellas County.
For family sessions, the park offers an impressive amount of variety without ever requiring you to move your car.
You can work the open green spaces for wide, airy shots. You can use the waterfront promenade for walking moments with that harbor view in the background. The Coachman Gardens section along the eastern edge has walking paths lined with palms and classic Florida vegetation that give you a more natural, lush feel. And the pedestrian bridge over the lake offers a completely different look with reflective water and clean sightlines.
The park also has colorful murals throughout created by local artists, a pirate-themed playground, and a splash pad with 68 nozzles that kids absolutely love. If you have a session that ends a little early or kids who need to burn energy before we start, this park handles that naturally.
Best for: Families who want variety in one central location. Great for all ages and family sizes.
Photographer’s tip: Position your session to end at the waterfront right at golden hour. The light reflecting off Clearwater Harbor during the last 30 minutes before sunset is genuinely beautiful and hard to replicate anywhere else in the area.
2.) Sand Key Park

Sand Key Park is the best-kept secret on the Clearwater coastline. It sits just south of Clearwater Beach across the Clearwater Pass Bridge, and the difference in atmosphere is immediate. Where Clearwater Beach proper gets busy and loud, Sand Key is calm, spacious, and almost always less crowded. It covers 95 acres with two distinct areas: a wide white sand beach along the Gulf, and a park area with nature trails, a salt marsh, a playground, a dog park, and picnic shelters with grills.
For photography, Sand Key is exceptional at golden hour. The Gulf faces west, which means sunset light hits the beach and the water directly. You get that warm, orange glow that makes family photos look like they belong in a magazine. The beach is wide and open with simple backgrounds, which keeps the focus on your family rather than whatever is happening behind you. And because the crowd is more manageable than the main strip, you get cleaner shots without strangers walking through your frame.
The north end of the park near the rock wall is particularly good for photographers. You get a slightly different angle, interesting foreground texture from the rocks, and sailboats drifting through the background as the sun goes down. It is one of those spots that just photographs beautifully with almost no effort.
Best for: Families who want that classic Florida beach session with warm sunset light and open sky. Great for all ages.
Photographer’s tip: Plan to arrive 90 minutes before sunset to get a mix of beach play shots while the light is still bright, then transition to the warmer golden light as the sun drops. Parking is $6 per day and credit card only.
3.) Crest Lake Park

Crest Lake Park is the most underrated spot on this list. It is a neighborhood park that draws locals rather than tourists, which means cleaner backgrounds, fewer distractions, and a relaxed energy that puts kids at ease almost immediately. The park is built around a peaceful lake with a walking loop, shaded tree canopy along the path, open grassy fields, a dog park, a splash pad, and a Veterans Memorial Plaza that adds some visual interest without being visually distracting in photos.
What makes Crest Lake work especially well for family photography is the variety of environments packed into a manageable space.
The shaded lake path gives you beautiful dappled light that works great even outside of golden hour, which is helpful if your schedule doesn’t allow for a sunset session. The open fields give you room for kids to run and play, which produces natural movement-based shots. And the tree canopy sections give you that layered, organic background that makes photos feel warm and personal rather than flat and generic.
It is also genuinely kid-friendly. The splash pad is a great way to let little ones burn energy before a session, and the low-traffic environment means toddlers can roam without parents feeling anxious about keeping them corralled.
Best for: Energetic toddlers and school-age kids who need room to move. Families who want a natural park feel without tourist crowds.
Photographer’s tip: The tree-lined section along the lake edge is the strongest spot in this park photographically. Aim to work that section during the last hour before sunset when the light filters through the canopy at a lower angle.
4.) Moccasin Lake Nature Park

Moccasin Lake Nature Park is for families who want something genuinely different. This 51-acre nature preserve sits in the middle of Clearwater with trails and boardwalks winding under a canopy of mature oak trees, across ponds and creek crossings, and through some of the most organic, textured scenery you will find anywhere in Pinellas County. It is quiet, unhurried, and has a slightly wild quality that shows up clearly in photos.
The boardwalk sections over the water are a particular highlight. They give you a backdrop that no other Clearwater location can offer: water beneath you, tree canopy above, and natural light filtering through in soft, even patches that are flattering in almost any direction.
For families who love the “wild Florida” look with tall grasses, weathered wood, and green canopy overhead, this park consistently delivers it.
The park also has a wildlife rehabilitation area with birds of prey, a butterfly garden, a playground, and an education center. Kids who are curious and like to explore tend to do really well here because there is always something to look at and point to. That natural curiosity produces genuinely great candid expressions that you cannot manufacture in a posed setting.
One practical note: Moccasin Lake charges a small entry fee and has limited hours compared to a typical park. Check their current schedule before booking a session here.
Best for: Families who want a nature-forward, organic look. Great for kids who do better in calm, low-traffic environments with things to explore.
Photographer’s tip: The boardwalk over the water is the most unique spot in this park and worth building the session around. Morning sessions work particularly well here because the light comes through the canopy at a lower, more flattering angle early in the day.
5.) Philippe Park (Safety Harbor)

Philippe Park sits technically in Safety Harbor, just east of Clearwater on the shores of Old Tampa Bay, but it belongs on every Clearwater-area location list because it is simply one of the most beautiful parks in the entire Tampa Bay region. The park is defined by its massive old oak trees draped in Spanish moss, waterfront bay views, shaded walking trails, and a quiet, almost timeless atmosphere that feels completely different from the typical Florida beach or suburban park setting.
For family photography, Philippe Park has almost everything you could ask for.
The oak canopy provides beautiful, even shade that keeps the light soft and flattering throughout the session. The bay views give you a clean, open background with water and sky. The Spanish moss adds a layer of visual depth and texture that makes photos look genuinely stunning without any effort. And the quiet, low-traffic atmosphere puts even the most anxious kids at ease within a few minutes of arriving.
The park also has a historic Tocobaga Indian mound, covered pavilions, a boat ramp, and wide open picnic areas. It is a large park with enough variety to keep a session moving and interesting. Families who have done sessions at typical parks and want something that feels more dramatic and visually distinctive almost always love Philippe Park once they see the results.
Best for: Families who want something dramatic and visually different. The combination of Spanish moss, bay views, and oak canopy produces photos that stand apart from a typical park session.
Photographer’s tip: The waterfront edge at golden hour is extraordinary here. Tampa Bay faces west from this angle, which means you get a direct sunset view over the water. The combination of warm light, oak silhouettes, and bay reflections makes this one of the most photogenic sunset locations in the area.
How to Choose the Right Spot for Your Family
Not sure which one fits your family best? Here is a quick way to narrow it down:
- Want variety + downtown waterfront + easy access? Coachman Park
- Want classic Florida beach + warm sunset light? Sand Key Park
- Want a relaxed neighborhood park + great for toddlers? Crest Lake Park
- Want wild nature + boardwalks + something different? Moccasin Lake Nature Park
- Want dramatic scenery + Spanish moss + bay views? Philippe Park
If you’re still not sure, that’s completely normal. Location scouting is part of what I do. Once you reach out, I’ll ask about your kids’ ages, the look you’re going for, and the season, and I’ll recommend the spot that makes the most sense for your specific family.
Best Time of Day for Family Photos in Clearwater
Most sessions in this area look best during one of two windows:
- The last 60 to 90 minutes before sunset (golden hour)
- 60 to 90 minutes after sunrise, especially for little kids or during the hotter months
Florida midday light is harsh and unflattering. Scheduling your session in one of those two windows makes a significant difference in how the photos look and how comfortable your family feels during the session.
