Most photographers in Trinity want you lined up, want to tell you to smile, get you to hold still for the shot. That works on a poster. It doesn’t work for family photos.
I’ve been shooting weddings for years. I noticed something: the photos people kept, the ones they framed and hung on the wall, weren’t the posed ones. They were the accident shots. The kid running across the patio. Mom laughing in the background. The real moment, not the staged one.
I switched to family photography about six months ago because I wanted to chase those moments instead of waiting for them to happen by accident. That’s the whole difference between lifestyle photography and everything else.
Here’s how it works. You show up, I don’t. I mean I do, but I’m not directing traffic entirely or constantly. We’ll play some games with your kids. Maybe we’ll ask them to run toward you. Maybe we’ll just follow them around while they do their thing. I have a few bubble blowing guns as my secret weapon, what kid can resist? I’m watching for the moments where they’re so focused on what they’re doing that they forget I’m there. That’s when the real pictures happen.
Your kids think they’re playing and they are. You get to actually enjoy it instead of managing behavior for an hour. That’s the deal, their chaos is the point! Not the problem!
